Melania Trump, US President Donald Trump’s wife, confirmed Russian President Vladimir Putin was receptive to her appeal highlighting the plight of innocent children caught in the middle of the Ukraine war.
At a surprise press conference Friday, the First Lady said Putin agreed with her letter hand-delivered by President Trump during August’s summit in Alaska and had “responded in writing, signaling a willingness to engaged with me directly and outlining details regarding the Ukrainian children residing in Russia.”
“Since then, President Putin and I have had an open channel of communication regarding the welfare of these children,” Melania revealed.
“For the past three months, both sides have participated in several back channel meetings and calls, all in good faith. We have agreed to cooperate with each other for the benefit of all people involved in this war.”
The First Lady’s efforts appear to have been fruitful, with several children already returned to their families amid negotiations.
“My press representative has been working directly with President Putin’s team to ensure the safe reunification of children with their families between Russia and Ukraine. In fact, eight children have been rejoined with their families during the past 24 hours.”
Melania added she’d also had success in reunifying children who were minors when the war started but are adults now with their families, and “Russia has agreed to rejoin the individuals who have turned 18 within a short period of time.”
“Again, this remains an ongoing effort. Plans are already underway to reunify more children in the immediate future,” the First Lady said.
