An African refugee from the country of Mali is in police custody, accused of raping and brutally beating a 44-year-old Italian woman in the city of Sondrio. During the incredibly brutal rape, the man bit off the woman’s entire ear, according to police.
The woman remains in critical condition, with the suspect arrested just hours after the assault soaked in the woman’s blood.
The incident occurred yesterday, Oct. 6 into Oct. 7, while the woman was walking home. She was attacked by the man near a car park near the local train station. The man grabbed her, dragged her away, and then beat her with extreme force near via Morbegno and via Tronale. During the subsequent rape, the suspect is accused of biting the victim’s ear off.
A passerby noticed the woman laying in an unconscious state, covered in blood. Her face was severely battered and swollen, her entire body was covered in blood and deep lacerations, and her ear had been bitten off, according to local newspaper Sondrio Today.
The witness who helped the woman called the police at 11:30 p.m.
The woman’s body also had clear signs of sexual violence.

The woman was immediately transported to a hospital in Sondrio, where she was sedated and intubated.
On Tuesday, she woke up, but her condition did not allow her to be interrogated by investigators.
A large police manhunt was launched and the 24-year-old suspect was found just a few hours later not far from the site of the attack. The man was drenched in blood and reportedly intoxicated with alcohol and drugs. He also had the woman’s belonging, her identification card, and her bank card in his backpack.
He has been charged with rape, sexual assault, robbery, and bodily harm. The man was assigned a translator.
“What happened is from extreme gravity and brutality,” stated Attorney General Piero Basilone
The suspect was born in 2001, has the initials of KM, and is original from the African country of Mali. He currently resides as a refugee in the Valle di Colorina refugee reception center, which is run by an NGO that welcomes refugees.
The Italian public has been shocked by yet another rape case involving a foreigner. The local parties Brothers of Italy and the League, along with others, condemned the attack.
The mayor of Sondrio, Marco Scaramellini, also spoke about the incident in the context of mass immigration and public safety, including how local migrant reception centers are managed.
In 2024, it was reported that 11,141 Italian women had been raped by foreigners since 2018, underlining the massive increase in sexual violence seen across not only Italy, but also other Western countries, since a surge in foreigners.
