An upcoming soccer contest between Argentina and Puerto Rico is being move from Chicago to South Florida amid lagging ticket sales and concerns over federal immigration enforcement in the sanctuary city, according to reports.
The exhibition match, which was scheduled for Oct. 13 at Soldier Field in the Windy City, will now be held at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale on Oct. 14 instead.
“An Argentine Football Association executive confirmed the move earlier to the AP and said it was because of the situation in Chicago, where President Donald Trump has deployed the National Guard to quell protests against the immigration crackdown. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the relocation had not been publicly announced,” the Associated Press (AP) reports.
Organizers reportedly anticipated low attendance for the event, despite it potentially featuring Argentinian superstar Lionel Messi.
“Yes, confirming that the Argentina against Puerto Rico match has been canceled in Chicago,” Chicago Park District spokesman Luca Serra told the AP on Wednesday.
“The promoter made the decision this morning due to low ticket sales.”
More than 1,000 illegal aliens have been arrested in the Chicago area since the launch of Operation Midway Blitz on Sept. 8 amid ongoing riots, protests, and attacks on law enforcement.
Roughly 500 National Guard troops have been mobilized in response to the violence being fomented by radical leftists and illegal aliens in the sanctuary state of Illinois.
