Democrat Sen. John Fetterman (Pa.) said he’d back President Donald Trump’s Nobel Peace Prize nomination if he successfully brings the Israel and Ukraine wars to an end.
Discussing the president’s deal Wednesday brokering a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, Fetterman said he would fully support Trump’s Nobel nomination if the deal “sticks” and he agrees to supply weapons to Ukraine in its war against Russia.
“Well, I mean, if this sticks, I think the whole point of having a Nobel Peace Prize is for ending wars and promoting peace, and I’m going to make a direct appeal to the president,” Fetterman said in a Fox News interview.
“You know, I hope he chooses to provide the Tomahawks to the Ukrainians, too, and give them the tools that they need to push back against the Russia.”
“And if he brings the Ukrainian war to its end, I’ll be the Democrat leading the committee for his Nobel Prize Peace, for ending both these terrible wars.” [sic]
Elsewhere in his interview, Fetterman also departed from fellow Democrats by admitting he was “optimistic” the deal could lead to lasting peace.
“Now you have Hamas fully saying they’re committed to this, and of course Israel is now, too. But what’s also very important, too, all of the Arab nations around, whether it’s Egypt and Turkey and Qatar as well, have really pushed Hamas, saying this is going to be the best deal you’re ever going to get, and this awful war needs to end… So I’m actually optimistic that this week [we] have a chance for enduring peace.”
Fetterman, who has frequently made headlines for splitting from his party on major issues, said he believed he was one of the only supporters of Israel in his party.
“I believe I might have been the only Democrat that supported them through it. Today, I think it’s entirely appropriate to celebrate this,” he said.
“Thank God this terrible war is going to end, and these poor souls kept underground for over two years can come back home. I think I don’t understand why anyone’s reaction would be other than that.”
On Wednesday, Trump announced both Israel and Hamas had signed onto a peace agreement, with the first point of order being for Hamas to release Israeli hostages, which would be reciprocated by Israel.
