Image Credit: DHS Federal immigration agents were forced to open fire on a vehicle transporting illegal aliens when the driver attempted to run them over in Maryland this week.
The harrowing incident unfolded on Wednesday in Glen Burnie, a town in Anne Arundel County.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers conducting a targeted operation approached a cargo van carrying two male illegal aliens and instructed them to turn off the engine.
The driver, identified as Tiago Alexandre Sousa-Martins, refused to comply and instead rammed federal vehicles in an attempt to escape.
“He then drove his van directly at ICE officers, attempting to run them over,” the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) explained in a statement.
“Fearing for their lives and public safety, the ICE officers defensively fired their service weapons, striking the driver. Sousa-Martins then wrecked his van between two buildings, injuring the passenger.”
Officers rendered medical aid to both suspects, who were transported to a local hospital in stable condition.
The passenger was identified as Solomon Antonio Serrano-Esquivel, an illegal alien from El Salvador.
Sousa-Martins is a Portuguese citizen who has lived illegally in the U.S. for more than 16 years, DHS says.
“Sousa entered the United States in December 2008, but he violated the terms of his admission when he refused to leave the country when his visa expired in February 2009,” an ICE spokesperson told Border Hawk.
“Anti-ICE rhetoric and outright lies of politicians, the news media, activists, and violent agitators continue to fuel a more than 1,150% increase in assaults against ICE officers.”
An investigation is ongoing.
Illegal aliens and radical leftists become increasingly brazen in their resistance to immigration law enforcement.
