A U.S. citizen was arrested for human smuggling after authorities found a large group of illegal aliens stashed inside a broken down camper in southern Arizona.
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) just released details about the bust, which unfolded recently in Nogales.
U.S. Border Patrol, working alongside Homeland Security Investigations and the Nogales Police Department, located a total of 17 illegals from Mexico during the operation.
The majority of the Mexicans were discovered inside a recreational vehicle parked on a property among other abandoned trucks and cars.
The rest were found in a small sedan being driven by the smuggling suspect.
“Temperatures inside the vehicles were rising quickly under the summer sun, and those inside had limited space, ventilation and no access to running water,” CBP explained in a press release.
One individual attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended.
The illegals were “fortunately found in good health and will now be processed for removal proceedings ASAP,” explained USBP Tucson Sector Chief Sean L. McGoffin.
“No recreation happening in this vehicle, instead it was used by smugglers forcing people to hide out in inhumane conditions in sweltering heat.”
The U.S. citizen is now facing human smuggling charges.
