Karmelo Anthony, the teenager accused of stabbing fellow schoolboy Austin Metcalf to death at a track meet in Texas, has applied for a state-appointed public defender to represent him in the case, claiming financial hardship, despite raising hundreds of thousands of dollars through crowdfunding.
The Anthony family have also raised the goal of the “Help Karmelo Anthony Official Fund” on GiveSendGo to $1.4 million, from its previous goal of $600,000. The fund had raised $595,000 just a few days ago.
Since Karmelo Anthony’s release on a $250,000 bail with an ankle monitor, there has been intense focus on his family’s spending using the money raised via its Official Fund.
As well as buying a new Cadillac and expensive sportswear, the family moved in to a $900,000 rented home in a gated community.
Anthony, 18, was arrested for the killing of Metcalf, 17, at a school track meet in Frisco, Texas.
He maintains that he acted in self-defense, vowing that “the truth will come out.”
An initial statement by local police said there was a physical altercation between the two teens before the stabbing, but video evidence shown to journalists a week ago reveals there was no apparent physical altercation before the stabbing.
A journalist for DailyMail.com watched a 40-minute surveillance video from the fateful day.
“The 40-minute surveillance video, recorded from a stationary camera on the opposite side of the football field, captures the 10 minutes leading up to the attack and the desperate efforts by Metcalf’s twin brother and others to save his life before paramedics arrived,” Maryann Martinez explains.
“However, the footage reviewed by the Daily Mail at the Frisco Independent School District’s headquarters shows no obvious physical confrontation between the two prior to the stabbing,” Martinez continues.
“The Daily Mail did not detect anything that indicated chaos was about to ensue.”
Until now, authorities had resisted releasing any footage of the stabbing, which took place at the beginning of April, and events leading up to it.
Anthony is due to face trial next year.
