Legacy media falsely reported that Trump pardon attorney Ed Martin and FHFA Director Bill Pulte were under investigation by the Department of Justice for their role in probing Sen. Adam Schiff’s (D-Calif.) mortgages, according to Just The News.
Reports last week by CNN, the Associated Press and MSNBC claimed Martin, who’s heading up President Trump’s government weaponization task force, and Pulte, the Federal Housing Finance Agency director, were being probed by the Maryland US Attorney’s office over their handling of the Schiff investigation.
The reporting stemmed from a grand jury subpoena last Thursday of California Republican Christine Bish, who had filed an ethics complaint last month against Schiff alleging he’d illegally claimed two homes in California and Maryland as his primary residences. Bish told the AP she was asked about any communications she’d had with Martin or Pulte.
Speaking to Just The News on the condition of anonymity, a source disputed the reporting and said there were no DOJ probes into the two Trump admin figures.
“Ed Martin and Bill Pulte are not being investigated by a grand jury,” the source said, adding, “The Bish subpoena related to documents relevant to the Adam Schiff mortgage fraud investigation.”
Former Pam Bondi chief of staff Chad Mizelle likewise dismissed the reporting Friday on X, writing that Schiff’s attorneys were attempting to learn to what extent the Trump figures were involved in Bish’s complaint.

“Completely wrong,” Mizelle wrote. “DOJ knows that when it indicts Schiff, he will immediately attack the evidence. Say it’s tainted. Argue about the chain of custody. Say the prosecution is improper. So what does a smart prosecutor do? Figure out exactly who is talking to who so there are no surprises.
“DOJ isn’t investigating their own. They are getting ready to drop a bomb on Adam Schiff,” he added.
Pulte sent a criminal referral against Schiff to the Justice Department in May, alleging a “sustained pattern of possible occupancy misrepresentation” for allegedly listing two homes as his primary residence in order to obtain more favorable loan terms.
“Based on media reports, Mr. Adam B. Schiff has, in multiple instances, falsified bank documents and property records to acquire more favorable loan terms, impacting payments from 2003-2019 for a Potomac, Maryland-based property,” Pulte wrote in the referral.
He added: “Mr. Schiff appears to have falsified records in order to receive favorable loan terms, and also appears to have been aware of the financial benefits of a primary residence mortgage when compared to a secondary residence mortgage as a spokesperson in 2023 told the media outlet CNN that, ‘Adam’s California and Maryland addresses have been listed as primary residences for loan purposes because they are both occupied throughout the year and to distinguish them from a vacation property.'”
While Schiff’s team has attempted to claim both homes are “occupied throughout the year,” policies from lenders like Freddie Mac prohibit Americans from claiming two homes as their primary residences.
“As regulator of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and the Federal Home Loan Banks, we take very seriously allegations of mortgage fraud or other criminal activity. Such misconduct jeopardizes the safety and soundness of FHFA’s regulated entities and the security and stability of the U.S. mortgage market,” Pulte wrote.
