The 34-year-old Toufik H. was sentenced to nearly eight years in prison in 2023 for stabbing the boyfriend of his German ex-girlfriend. He was being held in a psychiatric facility due to his drug addiction.
On Oct. 31, between 10:40 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. the prisoner partook in a daring escape by taking advantage of a changing of staff at the Clinic for Forensic Psychiatry in Leipzig-Dösen. While going unnoticed by security staff and supervisors, he climbed over a fuse box, over a fence, and then balanced along a wall before jumping on a steel beam and walking away towards freedom.
The man tripped a burglary alarm, but security staff thought someone had broken into the property, rather than someone escaping. The staff went nearly two hours before they noticed Toufik H. was missing.
German police have launched a nationwide search for Toufik H., and there are fears he could target his 21-year-old ex-girlfriend and try to kidnap their 4-year-old daughter, according to German news outlet Tag24.
Toufik H. attacked his ex-girlfriend in Leipzig in the summer of 2022 because he would not accept the end of their relationship. When her new boyfriend tried to intervene against the Algerian, Toufik H. stabbed him.
Toufik H. also suffers from various addictions, which led him to being admitted to a rehabilitation and psychological treatment center. Police say it is very possible he will attempt to travel to Berlin.
Police also say Toufik H. poses a serious threat, and nobody should actively confront the man if they see him. Instead, they should contact emergency services immediately.
