Covering Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani’s New York City mayoral election victory on Tuesday night, CNN’s Van Jones and Scott Jennings each expressed concerns about the newly-elected Big Apple mayor’s victory speech.
The left-leaning Jones took issue with Mamdani switching from someone who “was a lot more calm, a lot warmer and more embracing” on the campaign trail to the angry and divisive person shouting in his post-election address.
Responding to Jones, CNN conservative firebrand Jennings sarcastically asked, “Oh. Are you saying he wasn’t the unifying voice of a generation that you predicted mere minutes ago? Where was the man that you predicted would not slice and dice?” saying, “Guys, he started his speech by quoting Eugene Debs who ran for president five times as the Socialist Party of America candidate.”
Jennings continued to note Mamdani “went after everybody he thinks is a problem,” such as “people who own things, people who have businesses.”
The CNN commentator also called out the new mayor for saying there’s no problem too big or too small for government to solve, pointing out that type of thinking inevitably results in “tax increases as far as the eye can see.”
He said massive tax hikes mean “the people who need to provide jobs to the young people that you say need jobs are going to flee as quickly as they possibly can.”
“I think this was a divisive speech, and he clearly sees the world in terms of the people who are oppressing you and the oppressed, and he said, ‘The oppressed are now in City Hall!'” Jennings added.
Handing out one backhanded compliment to Mamdani and the Democrats, Jennings said, “He’s the greatest actor you have. You know, he turned himself into a hood ornament for the poor and the downtrodden. He’s a rich kid who is a great actor.”
