Cuban and US officials have held talks as the Caribbean island struggles through blackouts caused by the ongoing fuel blockade.
Miguel Díaz-Canel, Cuba’s President, said, “These talks have been aimed at finding solutions through dialogue to the bilateral differences we have between the two nations.”
“Whenever we have been in tense situations in relations with the United States, efforts have been made to find channels for dialogue,” Díaz-Canel continued.
“I believe the most recent example were the talks with President Obama.”
The nature of the talks is unclear, but senior members of the Trump administration, as well as Trump himself, have signaled their intention to topple the communist regime that has governed Cuba since the 1950s.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio, himself the son of Cuban exiles, has made clear his support for regime change, and President Trump repeated his call for a “friendly takeover” of the island, before adding, “It may not be a friendly takeover.”
After ousting Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro at the beginning of January, President Trump signed an Executive Order that placed an effective blockade on shipments of oil to Cuba.
No oil has now entered Cuba for three months, leading to widespread blackouts and unrest.
Footage posted to social media apparently shows violent protests against the communist regime.
