On Monday the South East Asian countries of Cambodia and Thailand agreed to a ceasefire deal which they credited President Donald Trump for brokering. The ceasefire was in response to a border battle which broke out Thursday.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim hosted a high level meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai Monday which led to the truce. The warring nation’s leaders affirmed their countries’ commitment to a peaceful resolution at a joint press conference with Anwar.
The three national leaders said they were grateful to President Donald Trump and the Chinese government for their roles in facilitating the peace agreement.
Trump announced the ceasefire deal Monday:
Just spoke to the Acting Prime Minister of Thailand and Prime Minister of Cambodia. I am pleased to announce that, after the involvement of President Donald J. Trump, both Countries have reached a CEASEFIRE and PEACE. Congratulations to all! By ending this War, we have saved thousands of lives. I have instructed my Trade Team to restart negotiations on Trade. I have now ended many Wars in just six months — I am proud to be the President of PEACE!

RT chronicled the diplomatic effort that took place in South East Asia Monday:
Anwar, who led the mediation efforts, said the ceasefire would take effect at midnight local time. Both countries also pledged to convene meetings between military commanders on Thursday and reconvene a joint border monitoring committee in early August to establish a formal mechanism for verifying compliance with the agreement.
Anwar also offered to provide observers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), which Malaysia currently chairs, and organize a broader monitoring mission with other ASEAN members to support the ceasefire.
On Saturday the President was working to broker a peace deal:
I just had a very good call with the Prime Minister of Cambodia, and informed him of my discussions with Thailand, and its Acting Prime Minister. Both Parties are looking for an immediate Ceasefire and Peace. They are also looking to get back to the “Trading Table” with the United States, which we think is inappropriate to do until such time as the fighting STOPS. They have agreed to immediately meet and quickly work out a Ceasefire and, ultimately, PEACE! It was an Honor to deal with both Countries. They have a long and storied History and Culture. They will hopefully get along for many years to come. When all is done, and Peace is at hand, I look forward to concluding our Trading Agreements with both!

At least 12 people died and 31 were injured following Thursday’s clashes. Nearly all the dead and injured were civilians. The battle stemmed from colonial-era French maps that left parts of the Southeast Asian nation’s borders ill-defined.
