Multiple firefighters and police officers have been shot in a possible ambush while responding to a potential arson blaze in North Idaho, according to reports.
Kootenai County Emergency Management has issued a “shelter in place” advisory for the Canfield Mountain Trailhead area in Coeur d’Alene and is urging members of the public to “avoid the area” following a suspected mass shooting on Sunday afternoon.
Authorities reportedly believe a suspect(s) set a brush fire to lure emergency responders to the area and then opened fire.
The Idaho Tribune has published unconfirmed reports that nine firefighters and two officers were shot, citing police scanner chatter.
“Fire crews are being shot at and several have been shot according to radio traffic,” North Idaho News reports.
“Fire was intentionally set to draw in fire fighters. Fire fighters are pinned down.”
Resources and personnel are reportedly being surged to the area from neighboring counties and nearby Spokane, WA, and Life Flight Network is dispatching all available helicopters.
