Image Credit: Spencer Platt/Getty Images Two suspects who are believed to be illegal aliens with ties to Tren de Aragua were shot when they tried to run over federal immigration agents in Oregon on Thursday afternoon, authorities say.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) says U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) agents conducted a targeted vehicle stop in Portland at around 2:15 p.m.
The passenger of the vehicle was identified as a “Venezuelan illegal alien affiliated with the transnational Tren de Aragua prostitution ring and involved in a recent shooting in Portland.”
The driver is also believed to be a Venezuelan illegal alien and member of Tren de Aragua.
After agents identified themselves to the occupants, the driver reportedly attempted to run them over.
“Fearing for his life and safety, an agent fired defensive shots. The driver drove off with the passenger, fleeing the scene,” DHS says.
USBP immediately called 911 to notify local authorities about the shooting, according to reports.
Minutes later, a man also called 911 to report that he had been shot.
Responding Portland Police Department officers found a man and woman suffering from gunshot wounds roughly 2.5 miles from the scene of the incident.
The man and woman are believed to be a married couple who are currently alive, according to the latest available information.
In response to news of the shooting, the Portland City Council abruptly recessed an in-progress meeting.
