Update (Sept. 1, 3:43 p.m. CT): President Donald Trump said he would bestow Rudy Giuliani with the presidential Medal of Freedom, just one day after a car accident where the former NYC mayor sustained serious injuries.
“As President of the United States of America, I am pleased to announce that Rudy Giuliani, the greatest Mayor in the history of New York City, and an equally great American Patriot, will receive THE PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF FREEDOM, our Country’s highest civilian honor,” Trump posted to Truth Social on Monday, not directly commenting on the accident.

“Details as to time and place to follow. Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!” he added.
Original story appears below….
Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani seriously injured his spine in a car accident in New Hampshire Saturday night after stopping to help a domestic assault victim.
The New York Post has more:
Giuliani, 81, was hospitalized with a fractured vertebrae and multiple cuts and bruises, including injuries specifically to his left arm and lower leg, after his rent-a-car was hit from behind, spokesman Michael Ragusa said Sunday.
Giuliani, dubbed “America’s mayor” for leading NYC amid the 9/11 terror attacks, was a passenger in a rented Ford Bronco when he and the driver, Theodore Goodman, stopped to help a woman who flagged them down.
“Mayor Giuliani was flagged down by a woman who was a victim of domestic violence prior to the accident,” Ragusa said. “He rendered assistance and contacted 911, remaining on scene until responding officers arrived to ensure her safety.”
Their vehicle was then hit from behind by a 19-year-old woman driving a Honda HR-V.
“The accident occurred after he re-entered his vehicle, which was then hit from behind at high speed,” Ragusa described.
The New York Times reported: “Troopers and fire officials responding to the domestic violence report witnessed the collision and crossed the interstate to help at the accident scene, the state police said.”
Giuliani, Goodman and the woman were transported to a hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Ragusa noted he did not believe the mayor was targeted, saying, “no one knew it was [Giuliani].”
“The mayor is in great spirits. He’s a beast. He survived 9/11,” Ragusa added.
Giuliani’s son Andrew gave a positive update on his dad to the Post, saying, “Thank Goodness he’s doing OK…Fractured vertebrae. More to come … Please keep him in your prayers.”
Trump confidant Roger Stone, who was T-boned in a hit-and-run accident in 2017 by an unknown assailant, sent his friend well-wishes on X, writing, “I am praying for the speedy recover of my friend Mayor Rudy Giuliani, the greatest Mayor in New York City history.”
President Trump has not yet commented on his longtime friend’s injuries, but a statement is likely imminent.
