A teenage boy was killed by an illegal alien who was driving drunk in Louisiana this week, according to authorities.
The horrifying incident unfolded at around 7:00 p.m. on Thursday night in Livingston Parish.
The 15-year-old victim was riding a bicycle in his subdivision when the driver of a vehicle ran him over and then fled the scene, the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office explained in a press release.
The boy was airlifted to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The driver was apprehended a short time later and identified as Juan Alfredo Chavarria Lezama, 31.
“Impairment (on the part of the driver) was observed at the scene. Through the investigation, it was determined that the driver was over two times the legal Blood Alcohol Concentration limit,” Sheriff Jason Ard stated.
Sheriff Ard later confirmed that Chavarria Lezama is a citizen of Nicaragua who is in the U.S. illegally.
“He’s an undocumented male, a Hispanic male, here illegally from what we’re gathering. He does have an ICE detainer at the time. He’s also charged with multiple charges like the vehicular homicide, reckless operation, DWI first offense,” Ard said.
Ard says visibility was not a factor, given the conditions and time of day.
“It’s not like it’s 10 or 12 at night. It’s 7 o’clock. There’s still some daylight out there. Obviously, his impairment is the main cause here,” he clarified.
Chavarria Lezama is being held at the Livingston Parish Detention Center and an investigation is ongoing.
