Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky will meet with President Trump at Mar-a-Lago this Sunday, as plans to end the conflict with Russia near completion.
Zelensky spoke to journalists on Friday and said he and President Trump will discuss security guarantees for Ukraine, territorial issues and a draft political framework for peace.
The framework is “about 90% ready,” Zelensky said.
He also added that an economic agreement with the US will be discussed, but cautioned that it might not be finalized before the end of the year.
The US has proposed a free economic zone in Ukraine, but details are unclear at this point.
Zelensky is reported to have floated the idea of putting the peace plan to a referendum in Ukraine, but this would pose challenges. Zelensky has said the referendum would require a 60-day ceasefire.
“It’s better to not have a referendum than have a referendum where people do not have the possibility to come and vote,” he said.
So far, President Trump appears unwilling to support the idea of referendum.
Trump told Politico, Zelensky “doesn’t have anything until I approve it.”
A revised draft of the political was produced during talks between Ukrainian delegates and a US team led by special envoy Steve Witkoff and President Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.
“This is a document referred to as a framework—a foundational document on ending the war, a political document between us, America, Europe, and the Russians,” Zelenskyy told journalists during a briefing just before Christmas.
“We are ready for a meeting with the United States at the leaders’ level to address sensitive issues. Matters such as territorial questions must be discussed at the leaders’ level.”
