Image Credit: DANIEL MIHAILESCU / Contributor / Getty Ukraine’s Dictator Vladimir Zelensky, who rules unelected, has reportedly ordered his advisors to plot a scenario where elections continue to be suspended and the country commits to years of war to justify continuing his dictatorship.
Zelensky remains in power despite no longer being an elected representative. He refuses to hold elections and uses the war as justification for his continued reign. It appears he’s looking at ways to continue this relationship.
“The Europeans said: ‘Fight for another year and a half to two years. We will give you money.’ Under their influence, Zelensky tasked the political leadership with developing a scenario where Ukraine will not hold elections for several more years, [ordering] to figure out how the Rada [parliament] will operate in such circumstances,” Ukrainian Pravda online newspaper quoted a source as saying on Thursday.
Ukrainian Pravda reported that Ukrainian members of parliament had high hopes for the Trump-backed peace talks that took place throughout 2025 yet failed to achieve their goal. Now the Iran war has brought the Ukraine-U.S.-Russia negotiation process to a stand still. Most of Ukrainian Pravda’s sources in the Rada now believe that Zelensky will not be holding elections any time soon.
TASS (The Russian News Agency) elaborated:
In particular, a senior Servant of the People member said that “there is no specific deadline for developing legislation on elections;” a working group is discussing various options and risks but has so far reached no concrete results.
RT reported:
The risk of Kiev running out of cash has been growing rapidly. With a proposed €90 billion ($105 billion) EU emergency loan remaining blocked by Hungary, growing dissent within the Ukrainian parliament has slowed down the adoption of measures needed to receive funding from the International Monetary Fund, the newspaper warned on Thursday.
On February 12 Zelensky announced that no elections will be held until security guarantees are acquired, despite Europe largely agreeing to guarantee Ukraine’s security already. Zelensky, whose term expired in May 2024, is holding onto power under martial law regulations which grant him permanent rule throughout the duration of the conflict.
