Federal authorities are attempting to take custody of a Nicaraguan illegal alien charged with viciously beating and raping an innocent woman on the streets of Chicago, IL.
On Wednesday, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released details about the brutal attack, which unfolded on Aug. 31 in the sanctuary city.
The 54-year-old woman was walking along a street in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood at around 3 a.m. when a male suspect identified as Leyter Jeferson Arauz-Medina emerged from a nearby park and ambushed her.
Arauz-Medina grabbed her by the hair and dragged her behind a dumpster in a nearby alley, surveillance footage reportedly shows.
“After strangling her, he then grabbed her by the hair with both of his hands and repeatedly slammed the back of her head into the concrete, causing her to lose consciousness,” stated Assistant State’s Attorney Michael Pekara.
Arauz-Medina reportedly proceeded to tear the woman’s clothes off and rape her until she regained consciousness and tried to fight back, but the assault continued until a passing motorist interrupted and sent Arauz-Medina fleeing.
“The victim sought help from that car, but it drove off,” Pekara said. “She then walked down Fullerton still completely naked, seeking help, ultimately coming upon a food truck that was still open.”
Responding officers quickly located Arauz-Medina and arrested him.
Arauz-Medina has been charged with rape, sex assault, assault, and drug possession, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has lodged a detainer against him, which is not likely to be honored.
The Nicaraguan illegally crossed the southern border near Eagle Pass, TX, on Sept. 17, 2024.
He was briefly detained then released into the U.S.
A federal immigration judge ordered him removed on July 17, 2025.
“This criminal, who JB Pritzker continues to protect, VICIOUSLY ATTACKED an innocent woman who was walking the streets of Chicago,” said DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.
“This monster was released into our country by the Biden Administration. Governor Pritzker and his sanctuary policies protect criminal illegal alien rapists over American citizens. We will do everything in our power to ensure this wicked criminal NEVER walks our streets again.”
