President Donald Trump on Monday announced plans for a “Golden Fleet” of battleships aimed at bolstering U.S. military defenses.
Trump announced the construction of two new “Trump-class” naval warships, part of a planned 20 to 25 ships, during a press conference at his “Winter White House” at Mar-a-Lago, flanked by Secretary of Defense Marco Rubio, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and Navy Secretary John Phelan.

“We used to make so many ships,” Trump said. “We don’t make them anymore very much, but we’re going to make them very fast very soon.”
“They’ll be the fastest, the biggest, and by far 100 times more powerful than any battleship ever built,” Trump said.
The president indicated the ships would be equipped with high-tech weaponry, including hypersonic missiles, state-of-the-art rail guns, and high-powered lasers.

The announcement comes as Trump criticized current warships as non-aesthetic during a meeting at Quantico in September, as he pushes for greater domestic ship-building capabilities in the United States.
“I’m not a fan of some of the ships you do. I’m a very aesthetic person and I don’t like some of the ships you’re doing aesthetically,” he stated at the time.
“They say, ‘Oh, it’s stealth.’ I say that’s not stealth. An ugly ship is not necessary in order to say you’re stealth,” Trump added.
The ship-building initiative comes as the U.S. attempts to match the naval capacities of various Asian nations, including China and Japan, while the administration is also reportedly weighing strikes against Venezuela.
