The male suspect exited the highway and continued to flee through residential neighborhoods until they reached the border river.
The driver and a female passenger then exited the SUV and ran into the water.
Troopers and U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) agents observed that the woman was carrying an infant in her arms and immediately urged her to bring the child to them.
The sobbing woman eventually approached the bank and handed the baby to an agent before being taken into custody.
“I can’t believe you tried to run back with a baby. You both could have drowned,” a trooper can be heard telling the woman.
Five illegal aliens found in the SUV were turned over to USBP.
The mother, identified as Brenda Castro, was charged with endangering a child and five counts of felony human smuggling.
Her husband escaped into Mexico and his current whereabouts are currently unclear.
Both suspects are U.S. citizens who live in Laredo.
