Police dashcam footage out of Washington State captured the harrowing moment a DUI suspect approached a female officer and attempted to disarm her, as male police officers showed up right in the nick of time to rescue her.

The incident unfolded on Oct. 15, in Thurston County, as a school resource officer responding to a major collision noticed the driver who caused the accident was acting erratically and ignoring her commands before he started walking toward the victim’s car.

“When the deputy placed herself between the victim and the suspect, a taser was deployed but didn’t work,” Thurston County Sheriff Derek Sanders wrote in an update on Sunday.

Footage shows the DUI suspect running at the female officer and assaulting her, as he tried to grab her sidearm.

Fortunately, a Nisqually Tribal Police unit arrived just in time to help the embattled officer, as the situation could have turned tragic in seconds.

Following a brief scuffle and multiple pistol whips, the suspect – 47-year-old Bryan Fleming, evidently a brown belt in jiu jitsu – was subdued.

“It wasn’t until another deputy arrived on scene and deployed a successful taser that the suspect surrendered,” Sheriff Sanders noted.

KATU.com has more on the events that led to Fleming’s crash:

The suspect was identified in court documents as 47-year-old Bryan McKay Fleming. In an arrest report, Washington State Patrol troopers said witnesses saw Fleming’s car traveling on Pacific Ave at a high rate of speed before colliding with a guardrail and then striking an oncoming car.

When questioned by a detective, Fleming said he drank seven bottles of “Nyquil” that day to help him fall asleep. When asked about the fight with the deputy, the arrest report said Fleming made statements about suicide.

Sheriff Sanders commended the female officer, saying, “He probably had 120 pounds on her, and he’s a brown belt in jujitsu as well…You can see more than a decade of training kick in for her – how she handled that, it’s a 10/10 across the board from start to finish.”

He also spoke to critics who said officers should have just shot the suspect, remarking, “You’ll hear people say ‘should have shot him, should have shot him’ – there’s not really an opportunity in there once he started the assault because the one thing you don’t is for him to have that gun out…My opinion is that should be a national model for how to defend your firearm in a fight; every police academy in the country could use that video for training.”
