The US and its allies struck ISIS targets in Syria on Saturday, as part of ongoing retaliation for the murder of three Americans in the country last month.

The strikes were announced by US Central Command (CENTCOM).

“The strikes today targeted ISIS throughout Syria as part of our ongoing commitment to root out Islamic terrorism against our warfighters, prevent future attacks, and protect American and partner forces in the region,” CENTCOM said in a statement.

“U.S. and coalition forces remain resolute in pursuing terrorists who seek to harm the United States.”

CENTCOM also shared footage that showed F-15 and A-10 jets taking off, and strikes on unspecified targets.

The strikes are part of ongoing retaliation for the murder of two National Guardsmen and a civilian contractor on 13 December, near Palmyra. Three American troops were also injured.

ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack, which was carried out by a lone gunman who was a member of Syria’s security services.

Syria’s Interior Ministry says it has arrested five individuals in connection with the attack.

The US response to the killings, dubbed Operation Hawkeye Strike, began on 19 December, when US and Jordanian forces struck more than 70 ISIS targets across Syria.

Between 20 December and 29 December, US and partner forces launched 11 more missions.

“Our message remains strong: if you harm our warfighters, we will find you and kill you anywhere in the world, no matter how hard you try to evade justice,” CENTCOM’s Saturday press statement concluded.

The US has maintained a troop presence in Syria for the last decade.
