Two officials from the US embassy are among four investigators who were killed after shutting down a remote drug lab in Mexico.

Their car was part of a convey driving through mountainous terrain in Chihuahua in the early hours of Sunday morning when it plunged off a cliff and exploded into flames.

Three of the passengers were thrown from the car and the fourth remained in the vehicle.

Pedro Ramón Oseguera Cervantes, the director of Chihuahua’s State Investigation Agency, and his bodyguard Manuel Genaro Méndez Montes were killed.

The investigators from the Embassy have not yet been identified.

Ronald Johnson, US ambassador to Mexico, paid tribute to the victims of the crash.

“We honor their dedication and tireless efforts to confront one of the greatest challenges of our time,” he wrote on X.

“This tragedy is a solemn reminder of the risks faced by those Mexican and U.S. officials who are dedicated to protecting our communities.

“It strengthens our resolve to continue their mission and advance our shared commitment to security and justice, to protect our people.”

Over the weekend, investigators shut down six secret drug labs, according to Fox News.

Large amounts of equipment for making drugs were seized.

One of the labs was described by a Mexican official as “one of the largest found in the country.”

In February, one of the most important cartel leaders in Mexico was killed in a joint Mexican-US raid. Nemesio “El Mencho” Cervantes was the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, which is famous for its brutality.

He was sought in the US for importing fentanyl, and a reward of $15 million was offered for information leading to his arrest.
