A Ukrainian national has been detained in the city of Dnipro, Ukraine, in connection with a wave of bomb threats that disrupted schools across the Czech Republic and Slovakia last September.
The arrest was part of a joint investigation involving Slovak, Czech, and Ukrainian police forces.
On Wednesday, Slovak police announced via social media that the man was taken into custody during coordinated raids, during which computer and mobile equipment were also seized. The arrest was carried out in collaboration with the Czech National Headquarters against Terrorism, Extremism and Cybercrime (NCTEKK) and Ukrainian authorities.
“We do not care about the nationality of the perpetrator, we care that the perpetrator is brought to justice and held accountable for his actions,” the Slovak police stated. They also thanked their Czech and Ukrainian counterparts for their cooperation in what they called a serious threat to public safety.

Czech counterintelligence service BIS confirmed the arrest and said the suspect is believed to have sent threatening emails not only to Czech schools but also to targets in other European countries. According to BIS, “the activities of the detainee were most likely financed by an actor from Russia,” though it did not elaborate or provide evidence to support this claim.
The threats, received at the start of the last academic year, prompted evacuations and major police responses across hundreds of schools in both countries.
The emails falsely claimed that bombs had been planted in the buildings. Slovak authorities treated the incidents as acts of terrorism, a charge which can carry a life sentence under Slovak law.
It is believed that up to 270 schools in Slovakia were targeted with threats in addition to other educational facilities in neighboring Czechia.
Investigations are ongoing, and authorities in all three countries are continuing to analyze the suspect’s digital equipment.
No further details have been released about the individual’s identity or the potential Russian involvement.
