On Tuesday President Donald Trump announced he will end federal payments to states with sanctuary cities – cities that harbor illegal aliens. On Wednesday morning he took to social media with a statement:
EFFECTIVE FEBRUARY FIRST, NO MORE PAYMENTS WILL BE MADE BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO STATES FOR THEIR CORRUPT CRIMINAL PROTECTION CENTERS KNOWN AS SANCTUARY CITIES. ALL THEY DO IS BREED CRIME AND VIOLENCE! If States want them, they will have to pay for them! MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!
Trump first announced this while speaking at the Detroit Economic Club on Tuesday.
“Starting Feb. 1, we’re not making any payments to sanctuary cities or states having sanctuary cities, because they do everything possible to protect criminals at the expense of American citizens and it breeds fraud and crime and all of the other problems that come,” he said. “So we’re not making any payment to anybody that supports sanctuary cities.”
Trump made a similar move in his first term, but was blocked by a federal judge in 2017. Trump’s own Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen defied the President’s wishes and in 2018 awarded grants to sanctuary cities.
In 2020 Trump again pushed to defund sanctuary cities, this time coming out with a win, but only after years of delays. The Hill reported:
“The three-judge panel found Congress had delegated authority to the attorney general to set conditions on the federal grant program it had created, called the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program.
The decision came after multiple courts had ruled against the Trump administration on the issue, saying it lacked the authority to impose immigration-related conditions on certain funding.”
