Image Credit: Anadolu / Contributor / Getty Images President Trump has reissued his threat to destroy Iran’s infrastructure—power plants, oil wells and even desalination plants—if the Strait of Hormuz is not immediately reopened.
In a post on Truth Social, the President said, “The United States of America is in serious discussions with A NEW, AND MORE REASONABLE, REGIME to end our Military Operations in Iran.”
He continued by hailing the “great progress” that has been made, but issued a stern warning that went beyond earlier threats to attack critical infrastructure that had previously been spared.
“Great progress has been made but, if for any reason a deal is not shortly reached, which it probably will be, and if the Hormuz Strait is not immediately ‘Open for Business,’ we will conclude our lovely ‘stay’ in Iran by blowing up and completely obliterating all of their Electric Generating Plants, Oil Wells and Kharg Island (and possibly all desalinization plants!), which we have purposefully not yet ‘touched.’”
President Trump ended his post by saying these actions would be “in retribution for our many soldiers, and others, that Iran has butchered and killed over the old Regime’s 47 year ‘Reign of Terror.’”
In an interview on Sunday, President Trump said his current priority with Iran is to take control of the country’s oil.
“To be honest with you, my favorite thing is to take the oil in Iran but some stupid people back in the US say: ‘why are you doing that?’ But they’re stupid people,” the President told The Financial Times.
The President compared his plans for Iran with the raid against Venezuela that took place in January, in which President Nicolas Maduro was deposed and Trump partnered with senior figures in the Venezuelan regime to take control of the nation’s oil.
“Maybe we take Kharg Island, maybe we don’t. We have a lot of options,” Trump said.
Between 80% and 90% of Iran’s oil passes through the Kharg Island terminal, in the Strait of Hormuz, which has remained largely closed to shipping since Operation Epic Fury began at the end of February.
Taking Kharg Island would not be a quick operation, Trump conceded, but would require the US to “be there for a while.”
Trump said he still believes a “deal could be made fairly quickly.”
The President also said he had spoken with the speaker of Iran’s parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who authorized ten Pakistani-flagged oil tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz as a gesture of goodwill.
Another 20 vessels will be let through after that, Trump added.
Publicly, at least, Ghalibaf has strongly denied negotiating with President Trump.
The Washington Post has claimed the US is now preparing for weeks of ground operations in Iran, “as thousands of American soldiers and Marines arrive in the Middle East for what could become a dangerous new phase of the war should President Donald Trump choose to escalate.”
“Any potential ground operation would fall short of a full-scale invasion and could instead involve raids by a mixture of Special Operations forces and conventional infantry troops, said the officials. All spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss highly sensitive military plans that have been in development for weeks.”
