New Orleans will be the next deployment for the National Guard as part of President Trump’s federal crime crackdown.
“We’re going to come into New Orleans, and we’re going to make that place so safe,” the President said on Friday night at an event held in the White House’s newly redesigned Rose Garden.
“It’s got a little problem right now, a couple of headaches, like murders, a lot of little murders going on, and we’re not going to stand for it. And we’re going to come in, we’re going to clean it up.”
President Trump floated the idea of sending the National Guard to New Orleans on Wednesday, as he weighed whether or not to send troops to a Republican state or to Chicago.
“We’re making a determination now—do we go to Chicago, or do we go to a place like New Orleans where we have a great governor, Jeff Landry, who wants us to come in and straighten out a very nice section of this country that’s become quite tough, quite bad,” Trump said.
After making the announcement on Friday, Trump pledged New Orleans would be safe within two weeks, and pointed to the success of his crackdown in Washington DC, which has seen rates for certain crimes, including murder and carjacking, plummet.
“That’s going to be the safest place, just like this is the safest place,” Trump said.
“And then we’ll be going elsewhere throughout the country, we’re going to bring crime down, because we can’t have cities that are unsafe.”
Last month, President Trump deployed National Guard troops to the streets of the capital “to rescue our nation’s capital from crime, bloodshed, bedlam, and squalor, and worse.”
Thousands of troops from multiple states have now been committed to the effort.
Soldiers from West Virginia, South Carolina and Ohio have joined members of the DC National Guard, as well as around 3,000 police officers from the Metropolitan Police Department and 500 federal law enforcement personnel.
In a post on Truth Social, President Trump hailed the effects of his intervention in the capital.
“Carjacking in DC is down 87%,” he posted.
“ALL other categories of crime are likewise down massively since I got involved. DC will soon be a CRIME FREE ZONE, in only 14 days, far faster than scheduled. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
