Foreign troops deployed to Ukraine would be a legitimate target for Russian attacks, Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned, after Ukraine’s President Zelensky said European troops could help guarantee his country’s future security.
On Thursday, French President Emmanuel Macron said 26 countries had agreed to provide post-war security guarantees for Ukraine. The proposed deployment would include land, sea and air forces.
After initially saying troops would be deployed inside Ukraine, Macron added a later clarification, saying some would remain outside the country and help train and equip its forces.
“It is important that we are discussing all this (security guarantees) … it will definitely be in the thousands (of troops), not just a few,” President Zelensky said after meeting a senior EU official in western Ukraine.
President Putin responded by saying European troops would be “legitimate targets” if they entered Ukraine.
“Therefore, if some troops appear there, especially now, during military operations, we proceed from the fact that these will be legitimate targets for destruction,” Putin said.
“And if decisions are reached that lead to peace, to long-term peace, then I simply do not see any sense in their presence on the territory of Ukraine, full stop.”
President Trump expressed his disappointment in President Putin again this week, as Trump’s efforts to secure peace after three-and-a-half years of war continue to stall.
Trump said he was “very disappointed” in Putin, and said on Friday he was also upset by moves from Russia and India to improve relations with China.
Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi both met Chinese President Xi Jinping this week.
“Looks like we’ve lost India and Russia to deepest, darkest, China. May they have a long and prosperous future together!” Trump wrote on Truth Social, after the meeting between the three leaders in China.
President Trump promised to speak to Putin again very soon. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said he had no doubt that a meeting could be organised very quickly.
European leaders are pushing for further sanctions against Russia.
“We are ready to do more, we are working with the U.S. and other like-minded partners to increase our pressure, through further sanctions, direct and secondary sanctions. More economic measures to push Russia to stop this war,” the EU’s Antonio Costa said.
