President Trump has vowed to issue an Executive Order requiring ID to vote, and also re-affirmed his opposition to mail-in voting.
“Voter I.D. Must Be Part of Every Single Vote. NO EXCEPTIONS!” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.
“I Will Be Doing An Executive Order To That End!!! Also, No Mail-In Voting, Except For Those That Are Very Ill, And The Far Away Military. USE PAPER BALLOTS ONLY!!!”
While the President did not give a timeline for the Order, it’s expected that it will be before the midterm elections, which take place on 3 November 2026.
At the beginning of the month, Trump said he would issue an Executive Order ahead of the midterms to end the use of mail-in ballots and return to the use of paper ballots rather than machines.
In March, Trump issued an Executive Order intended to fortify election integrity by changing rules related to voter registration, voting-machine security, voting deadlines and other aspects of the voting process.
He said the changes were intended to safeguard the vote against what he describes as “fraud, errors, or suspicion.”
The Executive Order was almost immediately challenged, and a federal judge came down on the side of the challengers, preventing implementation of most of the Order’s provisions.
