Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainees in Florida will soon be housed at a 30-square-mile property in the Everglades that will be surrounded by alligators.

Nicknamed “Alligator Alcatraz,” the facility is being built at the site of an old airport 50 miles outside Miami.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier said the detention facility will not need much investment because, “If people get out, there’s not much waiting for them other than alligators and pythons. Nowhere to go, nowhere to hide.”

The Florida AG also suggested the operation could be up and running within two months of beginning construction.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said Monday the federal government will fund a state push using the Federal Emergency Management Agency‘s (FEMA) shelter and services program to bankroll the project.

Noem issued a statement, saying, “Under President Trump’s leadership, we are working at turbo speed on cost-effective and innovative ways to deliver on the American people’s mandate for mass deportations of criminal illegal aliens. We will expand facilities and bed space in just days, thanks to our partnership with Florida.”

Newsweek published an article Tuesday showing satellite images of the site, and NBC 6 South Florida reported Florida Division of Emergency Management Director Kevin Guthrie “sent a letter to Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and Collier County Commissioner Rick LoCastro, signaling the government’s intention to purchase rights to the land for $20 million.”

A DHS official told the Miami Herald the facility will cost around $450 million yearly and that the state will pay for expenses while seeking reimbursement from the federal government if necessary.

DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin told the New York Times they hope to have some of the “Alligator Alcatraz” facility ready by July.
