President Trump on Monday signed an executive order mandating demonstrators who burn the American flag be sentenced to a year in jail.
“The people in this country don’t want to see our American flag burned and spit on … They’re bad people that are trying to destroy our nation…” he said.
While Trump supporters obviously don’t support burning the American flag, many of them voiced opposition to the EO and called it a violation of free speech and expression.
Others argued that if Americans are going to be prosecuted for damaging gay pride flags or Israeli flags, then people who destroy U.S. flags should also be held accountable.
In a second controversial announcement on Monday, Trump revealed 600,000 Chinese students will be allowed to enter the U.S.
The moves are being widely debated on social media.
