The United States Department of State and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) intercepted the child safely from Cuba to his mother in Utah earlier this month, according to an April 21 statement from the District of Utah Attorney’s Office. Inessa-Ethington, whose given name is “Eri,” and his partner “Blue” Inessa-Ethington, whose given name is Carly Ann Crosby, were arrested and have been charged with international parental kidnapping.
The boy’s family suspects they brought the 10-year-old, who allegedly identifies as “female,” to Cuba to have gender mutilation surgery.
“We are grateful to law enforcement for working swiftly to return the child to the biological mother,” First Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Utah Melissa Holyoak said in the statement.
“Our priority in every parental kidnapping case is the safety and well-being of the child,” Special Agent in Charge of the Salt Lake City FBI Robert Bohls added. “This case reflects the strength of partnerships in locating victims, supporting reunification, and ensuring accountability.”
According to court documents, the child was scheduled to go on a camping trip in Calgary, Alberta, in Canada from March 28–April 2. The boy’s mother became concerned when her son hadn’t returned on April 3 as planned, and she hadn’t heard from him or the group since March 28, when her son called to inform her that they had arrived in Canada. In the meantime, Inessa-Ethington had flown the 10-year-old from Vancouver to Mexico City then Havana, Cuba.
Interviews with the boy’s family revealed that he was identifying as “female,” which they believed was due to his “transgender” father’s manipulation, prompting concerns that they brought the child to Cuba to have mutilating surgery before reaching puberty.
On April 13, a Utah state court granted the boy’s mother full custody and ordered him to be returned to her. Three days later, on April 16, the group was located by Cuban authorities, and the child was subsequently rescued and returned to Utah. Inessa-Ethington and his partner were arraigned in Richmond, Virginia, and will be transported to the District of Utah where they will be tried.
In recent years, several state legislatures have attempted to hide children’s gender mutilations from their parents. One notable Washington state law passed in 2023 allows minors seeking so-called “gender affirming” procedures to do so without their parents’s consent.
