Image Credit: youtube screenshot US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent issued a special Tax Day message to American taxpayers, telling them to change their federal withholding amount in order to increase their take-home pay.
Bessent gave the advice during a White House press briefing Wednesday, crediting President Trump’s tax cuts for delivering record returns and refunds.

"I want to encourage everyone out there watching today to change their withholding … you will get an automatic real wage increase on a weekly or a monthly basis." pic.twitter.com/KZME0l0p4y
“…I want to encourage everyone out there watching today to change their withholding if they haven’t already done so, because if you change your withholding then you will get an automatic real wage increase on a weekly or monthly basis and you will be able to keep more of your money this calendar year.”
Bessent’s advice, urging taxpayers to update their W-4 tax forms, confused some, with many questioning whether lowering their federal withholdings wouldn’t come back to bite them next tax season.
“Hey keep the money for now, it will look like you have more money since you’re keeping the taxes and you can spend more but we’re taking it all back next year”

Wait what? Why would I do this only to have to pay it in the following year?
— AEKouri (@AEKouri) April 15, 2026
Ok change my withholding. Then owe more outta my ass when I file?

However, one overly optimistic X user chimed in claiming the Treasury secretary, who served as acting IRS commissioner until March 2026, was “signaling” a big change coming to the tax system soon.
Scotty is signaling to us to stop paying income taxes via payroll tax. He’s basically alluding to the fact that it’s a scam and we can take our money back by not paying into the system.

For all the slow people that don’t get what he’s saying*
The irs won’t be here next year
Bessent was already urging people to “change their withholding” last year, and predicted record refunds in the first quarter of 2026.

For his part, Trump has hinted at eliminating federal income taxes for earners under $200K, and replacing the Internal Revenue Service with an External Revenue Service that would collect tariffs and tax foreigners instead of residents.

The Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency also drastically reduced the IRS federal workforce in 2025, slashing around 25,000 jobs.
While the president’s Iran war fiasco has many divided, there’s no doubt eliminating income taxes for the working class would be a policy the American people can rally behind.
