Tabloid site TMZ on Monday evening reported the Trump administration was considering commuting the sentence of rap mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs after he was sentenced to four years in prison earlier this month, however, the White House batted down the claims the following day.

Despite the White House’s denial, TMZ says it stands by its reporting, which cited info obtained from an anonymous high-level Trump official.

Via TMZ’s report:

Donald Trump is considering commuting Diddy‘s sentence as early as this week, according to a high-ranking White House official.

According to our source, the President is “vacillating” on a commutation. We’re told some of the W.H. staff are urging Trump not to commute the sentence. But, our source states the obvious — “Trump will do what he wants,” and we’re told Trump could set Diddy free as early as this week.

The White House pushed back against the unsubstantiated claims, slamming TMZ for refusing to reach out for confirmation before running the speculative report.

“There is zero truth to the TMZ report, which we would’ve gladly explained had they reached out before running their fake news,” the administration said in a statement.

“The President, not anonymous sources, is the final decider on pardons and commutations.”

While the Trump administration vociferously denied the claim, TMZ updated their headline to state, “TMZ Stands By Story After White House Denial,” adding an update stating, “10/21 — 6:33 AM PT — The White House Communications Office is saying our story is not true. We stand by our story. Our story is accurate.”

In previous interviews this year, the president said he might consider the facts behind Diddy’s conviction if a pardon was requested, but noted the rapper was “hostile” and not too friendly when Trump ran for office.

In an interview with NewsMax in August, Trump said he was leaning toward “no” on a Diddy pardon.

While Combs skated on racketeering and human trafficking charges, he was convicted last July on two prostitution-related charges, with a judge earlier this month sentencing him to 50 months behind bars.
