Donald Trump on Sunday shredded a reporter for asking if he was literally going to war with the City of Chicago, after a Truth Social post by the president Saturday depicted a war-like scenario unfolding in the Windy City.
“Are you ready to go to war with Chicago?” the reporter asked outside the White House.
Trump responded by shutting down the reporter and pointing out his post dealt with cleaning up crime in the city, saying, “When you say that, darling, that’s fake news. Listen. Be QUIET. Listen. You don’t listen, you never listen. That’s why you’re second rate.”
He added: “We’re not going to war…we’re gonna clean cities up so they don’t kill 5 people every weekend. That’s not war – that’s COMMON SENSE.”
The president’s terse exchange with the reporter came as Democrats in Illinois lost it Saturday after Trump posted an AI-generated image of himself presiding over a military campaign in Chicago, hinting at plans to send the National Guard to quell violent crime in the city similar to Washington DC.
“The President’s threats are beneath the honor of our nation, but the reality is that he wants to occupy our city and break our Constitution,” Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson responded to Trump on X, adding, “We must defend our democracy from this authoritarianism by protecting each other and protecting Chicago from Donald Trump.”
Similarly, Democrat Illinois Gov. and 2028 presidential prospect J.B. Pritzker claimed the image symbolized Trump’s intent to go to war with Chicago.
“The President of the United States is threatening to go to war with an American city,” Pritzker posted to X. “This is not a joke. This is not normal. Donald Trump isn’t a strongman, he’s a scared man. Illinois won’t be intimidated by a wannabe dictator.”
