It has been just over two weeks since Sweden’s ‘Gender Affiliation Act’ came into force, making it easier to change gender legally without needing a ‘gender dysphoria’ diagnosis and allowing even 16-year-olds to pursue this course, with the consent of a legal guardian.
More than 100 people submitted applications to change their legal gender within the first week alone, according to figures from the National Board of Health and Welfare (or Socialstyrelsen). And mainstream media coverage has focused its attention on citizens for whom the law “just feels good,” also quoting (at length) supportive political figures while brushing briefly past critical voices.
Not that there aren’t enough of them. As we reported previously, the Sweden Democrats party has blasted the change as “madness, insanity, and folly” and has since pledged to repeal the law if it is elected next year. The smaller Christian Democrats also voted against the measures, and national polling suggests that most Swedes—to be specific, 59%—view the law negatively.
Despite all this, gender activists are already insisting that more radical changes should be made to make it even easier for a man to legally identify as a woman, or vice versa. The AFP news agency cites campaigners who “want Sweden to go further and allow people to change their legal gender without requiring a medical certificate.”
If public opposition did nothing to stop the first raft of changes, what will succeed in preventing further shifts to the Left?
Before the new law was adopted on July 1st, commentator Ola Kallqvist noted that Swedish officials “are so afraid of being called ‘transphobic’ that we would rather sacrifice the safety of children and legal security than say no to a destructive agenda.” Close attention must now be paid to campaigners’ next calls.
