Silver prices have reached new highs this week as the precious metal’s industrial demands and expectations of the Federal Reserve preparing to cut interest rates boost consumer confidence.
On Tuesday, silver passed $60 an ounce for the first time, and as of Thursday morning, it peaked at $63.
Gold is also rallying this week due to the Fed’s expected rate cuts and a weakening U.S. dollar.
Technologies such as electric vehicles (EVs) and solar panels are contributing to the rise in silver’s price with the metal acting as a superior electrical conductor to gold or copper.
According to the Wall Street Journal, “Silver is also getting a boost from worries that the U.S. could target the metal in future tariffs after adding it to the Geological Survey’s list of critical minerals last month, driving heavy inflows into the U.S. and tightening supply elsewhere.”
Silver prices have risen by 114.6% since January of this year, and experts such as the managing director of gold and silver supplier Solomon Global, Paul Williams, have predicted it will surpass $100 per ounce by the end of 2026.
While gold hit a record high in October, silver has outperformed it this year.
