A female victim lost sight in one of her eyes during a brutal ambush carried out by an apparently transgender suspect with a lengthy rap sheet in Washington state, according to reports.
The Seattle Police Department just released surveillance footage of the vicious assault, which unfolded on Dec. 5 in front of the King County Courthouse.
Jeanette Marken, 75, was reportedly delivering food when she was attacked on a sidewalk as she waited to cross a busy street.
A male suspect can be seen walking towards Marken, dragging a suitcase and wielding a wood plank in which was embedded a large metal screw.
The man can be seen stopping behind the unsuspecting woman, winding up, and clubbing her in the face with the board.
Bystanders and an officer stationed at the courthouse rushed to Marken’s aid as her attacker walked away.
He was arrested minutes later and officers confiscated the weapon, which can be seen more clearly in body-cam footage.
The suspect was identified as Fale Vaigalepa Pea, a 42-year-old vagrant with a long history of violent attacks and arrests.
“Is that Fale Pea?” a female SPD officer asked a male officer as Pea was taken into custody.
“Yeah, you know him?” the male officer responded.
“He’s notorious for random assaults on Third,” the female cop explained.
The male officer can also be seen telling an EMT about Pea’s reputation.
“He’s a regular. He usually punches. I guess today he decided to escalate things way worse than his usual,” the officer said.
Pea has a documented history of violence dating back to at least 2011 when he stabbed two people in at a party in Seattle.
“Pea continued to rack up assault charges, including one case in 2020, four cases in 2023, and one case in 2024,” KOMO reports.
“According to the King County jail, Fale has been booked eight times this year, though Seattle Municipal Court and King County Superior Court records show none of his arrests this year resulted in charges prior to the assault on Marken. Seattle police have arrested Pea repeatedly this year for charges of assault, indecent exposure, drugs, property destruction, unlawful use of weapons, and malicious mischief.”
Pea has been charged with first-degree assault and is scheduled to appear for a competency hearing later this month.
While Pea is clearly a man and was reportedly listed as a male on charging documents, his attorney has been referring to his client using she/her pronouns.
Court documents from 2013 also refer to Pea as she/her.
Marken suffered horrific injuries in the attack, as the screw in the board gouged her eye, causing permanent blindness.
“At the hospital, we learned she had multiple fractures in her face, skull and nose… and that the damage to her right eye was permanent. She will never see from that eye again,” her son explained in a GoFundMe established for her medical bills.
“For a woman who worked every day to support herself and her family, this attack took more than her health. It stole her independence, her ability to work, and the sense of safety she once had. Now even the simplest tasks are difficult. She faces a long road of surgeries, recovery, and emotional healing.”
Marken’s son shared a video showing his mother’s CT scan.
An investigation is ongoing.
