New York Attorney General Letitia James has been subpoenaed as part of a criminal investigation into her prosecution of President Trump.
The US attorney’s office for the Northern District of New York issued two subpoenas asking for information relation to James’s investigations into the Trump Organization and the National Rifle Association (NRA).
A grand-jury investigation has also been convened in Albany, New Jersey, to look into deprivation of rights by James against the President.
In September 2022, the New York Attorney General’s Office filed a civil lawsuit against Trump, his sons and the Trump Organization, alleging they had inflated the value of their property to mislead lenders and insurers.
A judge found Trump liable and ordered him to pay more than $450 million, a judgment he has appealed.
Trump was forced to post a $175 million bond as part of his appeal.
Throughout the civil trial, Trump directed angry testimony at James.
“This is a political witch hunt and I think she should be ashamed of herself,” Trump said of James, referring to her on another occasion as a “political hack.”
The NRA investigation led by James focused on allegations the group has violated laws for non-profit groups and committed tax fraud. The NRA was forced to change its structure as a result of the judgments against it.
The criminal investigation into Letitia James is one of a number of new or ongoing cases against former opponents of the President.
Former FBI director James Comey, former CIA director John Brennan, DHS official and “Anonymous” author Miles Taylor, former CISA head Chris Krebs and former special counsel Jack Smith are all subject to investigations by the DoJ.
Letitia James is also subject to an investigation in the Eastern District of Virginia over whether she committed fraud on a mortgage application.
