New York’s city and state governments have given more than $600 million of taxpayer money to legal and immigrant-advocacy groups fighting President Trump’s immigration agenda.
One group, the Bronx Defenders, has received more than $500 million in city contracts since fiscal year 2018 to provide legal services to migrants.
Other groups, such as Make the Road NY, have received tens of millions of dollars in contracts as well.
Make the Road organized a rally at the state capitol last month in support of a sanctuary bill. Protesters chanted, “No hate, no fear, immigrants are welcome here.”
The New York Immigration Coalition received $46 million in taxpayer money.
“New York City should not be in the business of carrying out Donald Trump’s mass disappearance agenda, which is in fact illegal under our local laws,” Tweeted Murad Awadeh, executive director of the NYICC.
These groups have been pushing a statewide sanctuary bill called the New York for All Act that would prevent state and local law enforcement from cooperating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. This would include providing ICE with information, as well as turning over or deporting illegal immigrants.
Another bill in the works, the Dignity not Detention Act, would ban local jails from renting space to ICE for detention of migrants.
Neither bill has yet passed the state Senate.
The city is now slated to spend $75 million on legal services for immigrants in its new budget, including just under $42 million for immigrants facing deportation.
Over the weekend, an off-duty Customs and Border Patrol agent was shot in the face in a New York park.
According to reports, two men on a moped approached the off-duty agent and a female friend while they were sitting near the Hudson River, in Fort Washington Park, New York, and attempted to rob them.
One suspect, Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez, an illegal alien from the Dominican Republic, fired shots at the off-duty agent, hitting him in the face and arm.
The agent returned fire and wounded Nunez.
The agent has now undergone surgery and is expected to survive. The wounded illegal was taken into custody.
The second suspect remains at large.
On Truth Social on Sunday, President Trump slammed Biden for releasing a “monster” into the country, and for “flood[ing] our Nation with Criminal Invaders.”
“Last night, in New York City, an incredible CBP Officer was shot in the face by an Illegal Alien Monster freed into the Country under Joe Biden. He was apprehended at the Border in April 2023 but, instead of being deported, was RELEASED. The CBP Officer bravely fought off his attacker, despite his wounds, demonstrating enormous Skill and Courage. The Democrats have flooded our Nation with Criminal Invaders, and now, they must all be thrown out or, in some cases, immediately prosecuted in that we cannot take a chance that they are able to come back. That’s how evil and dangerous they are!”
