On Thursday NATO Chief Mark Rutte said that European nations must prepare for a large-scale war with Russia which will rival the World Wars of the 20th century.
“We are Russia’s next target. And we are already in harm’s way,” Rutte said on Thursday during a speech in Berlin, Germany. “Russia has brought war back to Europe, and we must be prepared for the scale of war our grandparents and great grandparents endured.”
The NATO head also directed member states to get into a “wartime mindset.” He went on to stir up concern and sow unease.
“This is not the time for self-congratulation,” Rutte said. “I fear that too many are quietly complacent. Too many don’t feel the urgency. And too many believe that time is on our side. It is not. The time for action is now.”
The future looks bleak to Rutte, who expects the massive conflict to kick off in the second half of this decade.
“NATO’s own defenses can hold for now, but with its economy dedicated to war, Russia could be ready to use military force against NATO within five years,” he said.

Despite the West starting the Ukraine war in 2014, Rutte used Moscow’s reaction to being encroached upon and encircled over decades as proof Europe must directly fight Russia.
“Putin is paying for his pride with the blood of his own people,” Rutte said. “And if he is prepared to sacrifice ordinary Russians in this way, what is he prepared to do to us?”
Rutte has made a similar statement in November, saying “The danger posed by Russia will not end when this war does,” he said. “For the foreseeable future, Russia will remain a destabilizing force in Europe and the world.”
The Europeans as a whole have actively derailed peace on multiple occasions.
