A pair of Mexican politicians got into fisticuffs on the Senate floor Thursday during a debate over whether or not the nation should support American military intervention in its fight against drug cartels that have been terrorizing the country for decades.

Alejandro “Alito” Moreno, who is the leader of the Mexican opposition party PRI, and Senate President Gerardo Fernández Noroña started shoving and hitting each other while arguing about the highly controversial topic.

After repeatedly asking Noroña to let him speak, Moreno started shoving the senate leader, who shouted, “Don’t touch me!”

Moreno then pushed a man who tried intervening over a chair and onto the floor before continuing to swipe at Noroña.

Noroña later requested Moreno have his legislative immunity revoked and said he’d be filing a complaint for bodily harm.

“The debate could be very harsh, very bitter, very strong… today when (opposition legislators) are exposed for their treason, they lose their minds because they were exposed,” Noroña said.

Moreno posted to 𝕏 following the incident, saying Noroña changed the day’s approved agenda “minutes before reaching the corresponding point,” so he could silence the opposition from speaking out.

“The first physical aggression came from Noroña,” Moreno added. “He threw the first shove, and he did it out of cowardice.”

The governing Noroña party and its allies accused the opposition PRI and PAN parties of supporting US military intervention in Mexico, but both parties denied the allegation.

CBS News reported earlier this month that President Trump directed the Pentagon to take military action against Latin American drug cartels with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum declaring it “would not accept the participation of U.S. military forces” on her nation’s territory.

Several U.S. warships reportedly arrived in South America near Venezuela on Thursday.

Time will tell what comes of the Trump administration’s pledge to go to war with the drug cartels.
