President Donald Trump announced Coca-Cola company will soon begin using real cane sugar to sweeten its flagship beverage bottled in the US.
Trump made the declaration on Wednesday, revealing the high fructose corn syrup sweetener typically used in the United States to sweeten the popular soft drink will be phased out.
“I have been speaking to Coca-Cola about using REAL Cane Sugar in Coke in the United States, and they have agreed to do so,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“I’d like to thank all of those in authority at Coca-Cola. This will be a very good move by them — You’ll see. It’s just better!”
The move could help the Coca-Cola Company skirt tariffs on imports from Mexico, which bottles Coke sweetened with cane sugar, after Trump last week proposed a 30% tariff on potentially all imported Mexican goods, effective August 1.
Meanwhile, the move comports with Trump’s pledge to Make America Healthy Again, as the highly processed high fructose corn syrup – found in many American food products – has been blamed for a host of health problems, including rising obesity rates and other diet-related ailments.
