Image Credit: Anna Moneymaker/Getty Images President Donald Trump denigrated former counterterrorism chief Joe Kent following his resignation Tuesday, saying it’s a “good thing” because he didn’t support the Iran war.
“It’s a good thing that he’s out because he said Iran was not a threat,” Trump told reporters on Tuesday. “Every country recognized Iran was a threat.”
The president’s message came as Kent wrote an open letter explaining his decision to resign, saying the US was goaded to go to war “due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby,” and that Trump deceived by a pro-war “misinformation campaign.”
“Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation,” Kent wrote in his letter.
Following his resignation, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt issued a lengthy rebuttal to Kent’s “false claims,” saying he was wrong Iran posed no imminent threat.
“This is the same false claim that Democrats and some in the liberal media have been repeating over and over,” Leavitt wrote. “As President Trump has clearly and explicitly stated, he had strong and compelling evidence that Iran was going to attack the United States first.”
“This evidence was compiled from many sources and factors. President Trump would never make the decision to deploy military assets against a foreign adversary in a vacuum.”

Reports on Tuesday also claimed a high-level Trump official had called Kent “a known leaker,” noting the admin had asked Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard to fire him, “but she never did.”
Senior admin official says Joe Kent was “a known leaker” – and was cut out of POTUS intelligence briefings months ago. He has not been part of any Iran planning discussions or briefings at all.

Official says also the White House told DNI Gabbard Kent should be fired for…
Addressing Kent’s claims, DNI Gabbard released a statement backing Trump’s assessment of Iran as an imminent threat, saying, “As our Commander in Chief, he is responsible for determining what is and is not an imminent threat, and whether or not to take action he deems necessary to protect the safety and security of our troops, the American people and our country.”

“After carefully reviewing all the information before him, President Trump concluded that the terrorist Islamist regime in Iran posed an imminent threat and he took action based on that conclusion.”
