Following the Radical Islamic Terrorist takeover of Syria in November by ‘diversity-friendly jihadists‘, clashes between the new government’s forces and Druze militias have erupted. On Monday Israel began bombing the new Syrian jihadist government in order to aid the Druze. The strikes continued on into Wednesday when both the diversity-friendly jihadist government and the Druze announced a ceasefire.
“The strikes in Damascus come in the context of increased Israeli involvement in Syria. Over the last six months, Israeli officials have said that Jerusalem will act to protect the Druze in Syria after the fall of the Bashar al Assad regime,” the Long War Journal said.
The Druze are an Islamic-adjacent group, not a Jewish minority despite their Israeli support. According to Reuters:
The Druze are an Arab minority who practice a religion originally derived from Islam. They live in Lebanon, Syria, Israel and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, holding a distinctive position in the region’s mosaic of faiths and cultures.
In Syria, they are mostly based in the southern province of Sweida, although other communities live around Damascus and in northern Syria.
The Druze have a close-knit identity and distinctive monotheistic faith that emerged in the 11th century and incorporates elements from Islam and other philosophies, emphasizing monotheism, reincarnation and the pursuit of truth.
They maintain a degree of secrecy around their religious practice.
Israel has a small Druze community and some Druze also live in the Golan Heights, which Israel captured from Syria in the 1967 Six-Day war.
Tuesday’s Israeli action was initiated in response to clashes between Druze forces and Bedouin tribes however, indicating the Israeli agenda of defending the Druze against their multiple adversaries.
“Syria’s military entered Suwayda, a stronghold for the Druze community in the country’s south, on Tuesday after clashes broke out over the weekend between Druze forces and Bedouin tribes, reigniting fears of attacks against minorities,” CNN said. “Israel, which has vowed to protect the Druze in Syria, launched fresh strikes against Syrian government forces advancing towards Suwayda, and pledged to continue strikes to protect the group.”
Israel sees the Druze as a way to keep other Islamic groups away from its border.
“The announcement came after Israel launched a series of rare airstrikes in the heart of Damascus, part of a campaign that it said is intended to defend the Druze – who also form a substantial community in Israel – and to push Islamic militants away from its border,” the AP said.
The Jewish head-of-state admitted the Israeli agenda of keeping the region of Syria closest to Israel out of non-Drude Islamic control.
“We have a commitment to preserve the south-western region of Syria as a demilitarized area on Israel’s border,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.
In advancement of this agenda, Israel conducted attacks directly targeting the decision-making centers of the new Syrian diversity-friendly jihadi government.
“The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) conducted strikes near the Syrian Presidential Palace and targeting the Syrian government’s military headquarters in Damascus,” the Long War Journal said.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said “we are on our way towards a real de-escalation” in light of Wednesday’s ceasefire.
“We’re going to be working on that issue as we speak. I just got off the phone with the relevant parties. We’re very concerned about it, and hopefully, we’ll have some updates later today,” Rubio added.
While a previous ceasefire announced on Tuesday fell apart, Wednesday’s ceasefire announced by the Syrian Interior Ministry and in a video message by a Druze religious leader appears to be facing support by Washington based on Rubio’s statement, however the prominent Druze leader, Sheikh Hikmat Al-Hijri disavowed the new agreement.
