A 17-year-old high school student in Lycksele, originally from Iraq but now a Swedish citizen, has been convicted of raping a fellow student in a school toilet.
However, Lycksele District Court has decided that he will not serve time in prison and instead sentenced him to one year of youth supervision.
As reported by Samnytt, the incident took place in November last year during a school fair at Tannbergsskolan, where ninth-grade pupils visited the upper secondary school to learn about various educational programs. Among the students presenting was a 16-year-old girl in her first year of high school, described by friends as quiet and shy.
According to the court, the convicted student had been harassing the girl that day, claiming he wanted to “talk” to her. The girl eventually followed him to a nearby toilet, where he assaulted and raped her.
The attacker, born in Safwan, Iraq, denied the allegations during police questioning. He claimed that the girl had initiated the encounter, saying, “She started kissing me and she wanted to have sex.”
Nevertheless, the court found him guilty and ordered him to pay around €19,500 in damages to the victim. In addition to youth supervision, the punishment reflects the Swedish justice system’s practice of focusing on rehabilitation for minors rather than incarceration.
A teacher at the school described the boy as “usually happy” but noted his lack of awareness about the consequences of his actions.
The same teacher expressed concern on the day of the incident, reportedly fearing that the student might harm integration efforts at the school and bring the facility into disrepute.
As the teen is a minor and now also a Swedish citizen, he cannot be deported.
