Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) conducted an operation targeting 17 sex offenders in the Yellowhammer State last month.
On Jan. 21, HSI Huntsville collaborated with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) and the North Alabama Homeland Security Task Force to arrest Nixon Rubilio Mayen-Fernandez, a Honduran national previously convicted of sexually assaulting his own 11-year-old sister.
“A lead from DHS’ Child Exploitation Investigation Unit, which targets criminal alien sex offenders residing in the United States, led to the arrest,” ICE told immigration news outlet Border Hawk.
“HSI agents coordinated with the Dekalb County Sheriff’s Office to verify Mayen-Fernandez’s sex offender registry compliance. At law enforcement’s request, Mayen-Fernandez reported to the Sheriff’s office, where officers took him in custody for immigration violations.”
Mayen-Fernandez illegally entered the U.S. more than 10 years ago at an unknown location and date.
U.S. Border Patrol encountered the Honduran in 2015 and issued him a notice to appear before a federal immigration judge.
Mayen-Fernandez skipped a 2016 hearing in Dallas, Texas, and was ordered deported in absentia.
“Not only did this criminal illegal alien unlawfully enter the United States, but he also committed a heinous sex crime against his own family,” said HSI Alabama Special Agent in Charge Steven N. Schrank.
“ICE is committed to removing public safety threats from our streets, especially those who commit crimes against children. We deeply value our strong partnership with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office as it helps bringing dangerous criminals to justice and keeping our communities safe.”
DCSO is one of more than 30 Alabama law enforcement agencies partnered with ICE under the 287(g) program.
