A Syrian home care worker convicted of sexually assaulting a 67-year-old woman in Sweden told police during questioning that he “was horny,” newly released interrogation records have revealed.

The victim, who was dependent on home care services following a stroke, died just over two weeks after the attack.

Mahamad Almousa, 26, was sentenced earlier this month to one year in prison and ordered to be deported from Sweden for 10 years after the Vänersborg District Court found him guilty of aggravated sexual assault. The assault took place on April 3 last year when Almousa, working as a home care aide, attacked the woman in her own home.

The woman told investigators that Almousa pushed her onto the bed, groped her breasts beneath her clothing, and rubbed himself against her while “moaning.” “He rubbed himself, and I felt he was hard,” she said during questioning. “He lay there rubbing himself and moaning. He was hard, I felt that. I didn’t see it, but I felt it.”

In the newly disclosed interrogation records cited by the Samnytt news outlet, Almousa denied wrongdoing and claimed that the woman had hugged him, causing them both to end up on the bed. He admitted, however, that he was sexually aroused during the incident. “I was horny, but not for her. Not intentionally towards her,” he told police. Asked why he had felt aroused, he replied: “I felt horny because I felt that way.” He also admitted that he ejaculated, claiming it occurred later in his car. “In the car, I just felt horny. I put my hand on my crotch,” he said.

The victim described the assault as deeply humiliating and said she had suffered anxiety and depression as a result. “I feel mentally unwell, I cry and have had anxiety,” she told police. “You see how they look at me like a whore and a sex object,” referring to the migrant employees. She said she felt “worthless,” was relying on sleeping pills to cope, and felt that the attack had stained the memory of her long-time husband, whom she had recently lost.

The district court rejected Almousa’s version of events that she had dragged him on top of her, ruling that the woman’s poor health and limited physical strength made his account implausible. “In view of this and the other circumstances, Mahamad Almousa’s version of the incident can be disregarded,” the court wrote in its judgment.

Almousa was ordered to pay 152,000 kronor (€13,800) in damages to the woman’s estate and her son. The woman died on April 20, just over two weeks after the assault, while Almousa was in custody. The cause of death remains unclear.
