The attack, which took place on February 3rd in a classroom of young teenagers near Toulon, led to the pupil’s arrest on suspicion of attempted murder, according to public prosecutor Raphael Balland.
According to police, the stabbing occurred in the early afternoon on the grounds of the Collège La Guicharde, a public school in Sanary-sur-Mer, near Toulon. The 14-year-old student involved suddenly stood up and stabbed his art teacher three or four times before fleeing the classroom.
The teenager was arrested immediately and taken into custody. Police told Le Figaro that the student had previously received several warnings from his teacher, presumably due to his behavior.
France’s education minister, Edouard Geffray, wrote on X:
My thoughts immediately go out to the victim, her family, and the entire educational community, whose deep shock I share.
Jordan Bardella, president of the right-wing Rassemblement National (RN), also posted on social media:
This afternoon’s attempted stabbing of a teacher at a school in Sanary-sur-Mer has caused outrage. My thoughts are with the victim, whose life is in danger, with her family, and with all the teachers and students who are in shock.
France has seen a series of incidents in which pupils have attacked teachers. In a murder that horrified France, Samuel Paty, 47, was murdered by an 18-year-old Islamist radical of Chechen origin in October 2020–after showing cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed in class.
In June last year, a 31-year-old teaching assistant died after being stabbed by a secondary school student during a bag search in Nogent, eastern France.
Most recently, on September 24, 2025, a 14-year-old student in Benfeld stabbed his music teacher in the classroom before seriously injuring himself.
